Garden Songbird
Silhouettes Series
Simplicity
We often see
birds perched on a tree branch against a backdrop of sky. The way the light is
shining, we see only the silhouette of the bird, not the details. We may not be
able to identify the species but we know it is where that lovely song is coming from. Birds make us smile. They are a symbol of peace. They are around us every day and
often we don’t notice them.
Depth
Layers of
book pages represent my love and reverence for books and learning. Handwritten
notes by my mother, grandmother, husband, children and self add a personal dimension to this work. Payment stubs for a loan of some kind which
my grandmother saved for 40 years are added to each piece. The payment date
gives each work its title. Using these bits of ephemera add sentimental value
and joy. I was able to be with my family in my memories while creating this series. We all have enjoyed the pleasures of
bird watching.
Texture
The layering
of collage materials creates a texture that can be seen on closer observation.
Color
Transparent
color is subtle and builds depth as one color on top of the other changes it.
Beauty
Each stage
of the process has its own beauty. I often wanted to stop with just the first
layer, especially since many of the elements would be hidden. But like life, experiences are added each day that make us deeper, more complex and enriched individuals. We are all so much more
than how we appear at first glance. We each have layers of rich history that make
us unique and beautiful.
